How to Grow Healthier Grass and Fill in Dead Spots

Choosing your Grass Seed

Choose a type of grass that stays short if you do plan on buying any grass seed for your yard.

Be Careful with New Grass

Mowing grass can cause considerable damage to grass that is not healthy. If your grass is looking bad, then now is not the time to be mowing it.

Hold off on mowing your lawn until the grass looks healthy so that it will be able to withstand being mowed. Mowing grass is the equivalent of chopping it in half.

Revive dead patches of grass.

If grass dries-out completely, it's not always dead. It is possible to bring any of the green areas back to life and to encourage them to spread throughout your entire yard.

Grass spreads in two ways :

#1 - By seed. Which is a highly effective method for growing a lawn or ground cover!

#2 - By runners. (If healthy, some species of grass will send out runners under ground. This creates new grass patches all over the yard and if given enough time, this can fill in the entire area that you have designated to be your lawn.

Keep new grass Moist!

Water grass thoroughly once a day until the desired effect is achieved. Grass shouldn't need to be watered on cloudy or overcast days, unless the dirt is very dry.

Don't let grass dry completely out until it is fully green and healthy.

Tips! :

* Grass is very durable and once established, it will be able to go days without being watered. This is because, once the
grass has formed a thick mat over the surface of the soil. The grass forms a protective coating over the earth, that slows
down the evaporation process and holds in moisture.

* Bringing back a patch of grass that is mostly dead might seem like it will take forever. In reality and depending on how large
your yard is, the entire process should take less than a month.

* Don't walk on the grass anymore than you have to. While the grass is growing in, try to Walk Softly and keep off of the
  grass as much as possible.

Get Free Grass Seeds for Life!

Don't buy anymore grass seeds, especially if you already have grass growing. As I mentioned earlier, grass spreads on it's own, and in about the same time as it would take to grow a lawn from seed.

When mowing your grass, leave some patches of grass untouched. Uncut grass will start to seed. These seeds will spread all over your yard, filling in your lawn.

If you would like to keep the longer grass out of the way, you can always position these patches of overgrown grass towards the far side of your yard near a wall or rocks. Places of your lawn that you would need to use a weed whacker to cut are perfect for overgrown patches of grass. This overgrown grass effect looks neat and spreads seed over your entire lawn, turning a bare or patchy yard into a lush lawn of green grass.

Dogs like to eat and graze on uncut grass because it is easier to grasp with their teeth and long enough to pull out a tasty clump to snack on. Not all dogs like to eat grass but if you find a dog that does eat grass, try to leave a patch of overgrown grass and see how much the dog loves it.

Make your Lawn Organic and Natural!

Don't use harsh chemical fertilizers on your grass or any plants!

Fertilize grass with natural fertilizers. In the resources section of this article, I have included a link to my website. Specifically a link to an article about Home Made and Organic Fertilizers for plants.

Never use pesticides on your grass or any plants!

Bugs are a part of everyday life and no matter how much bug spray you fume up the planet with. It will not kill the bugs that fly or crawl into your yard tomorrow. However these toxins are in fact slowly poisoning any life forms such as humans that should have long life spans and live healthy lives.

Never use weed killers on your grass or any plants!

Weeds should be pulled manually! This can be hard work that you accomplish with your own two hands, with the help of good gardening gloves and a small shovel of course.

Please check the resource section of this article, look for a link titled : Toxic Chemical Information. Which explains the harm that chemical fertilizers, bug spray, pesticides and insecticides can cause to humans and the environment and gives organic alternatives and healthy solutions.

Diversify! Don't make your Lawn too Big.

Don't create more lawn space than you actually need!

Most people want to have a lawn for their children and pets to play on or simply so that they can enjoy it for themselves. This is completely understandable. However, Don't overdo it.

Try to confine your actual grassy lawn area to a minimum space that is the right size for your family but not too big for the environment. Often times grass needs more water than other plants and trees might need to thrive. These plants and trees that you could be growing in your yard can be a ground cover like grass but don't require any cutting.

Instead of grass, why not plant a huge shade tree in your yard. Just make sure it's not too close to your house or else it might interfere with your plumbing in a few years.

Wildflower gardens, vegetables rows, fruit and/or nut trees and berry bushes are other ideas that will take the place of a grass lawn.

Some of these alternatives to grass even produce fruit or veggies, which saves you money.

Who doesn't love to eat or cook home grown, organic food? Your family will certainly thank you. At least consider planting a large fruit tree in the middle of your lawn or off to the side. Any addition of varied plant species to a grass lawn is a good thing, because it increases the biodiversity in the area. This even includes potted plants. Happy Gardening!
