How to Sprout Granny Smith Apple Tree Seeds

Sprouting and growing Granny Smith apple trees in your garden is easy, especially if you have a large backyard.

Granny Smith apples are a very interesting type of apple. You'll have to wait a few years to find out what kind of apples the Granny Smith tree produces.

Granny Smith apples are perfect to use in apple pie and caramel apples.

This Granny Smith Apple Tree is a few years old.
It was grown from a seed out of an apple that I ate.

How to Sprout Granny Smith Apple Tree Seeds

Items that you'll need include :

* 10 Ripe Granny Smith Apples
* Knife
* Garden or Flower Pots
* Organic Potting Soil
* Water

Step 1

Buy 10 ripe Granny Smith apples from the grocery store and bring them home.

Peel one of the apples using a knife. Be very careful while peeling the apple. If you have more than one Granny Smith apple, then you can peel them all now or save some for later.

Eat or use the peeled apples.

Step 2

Carefully remove the apple seeds from the core of the Granny Smith apple. Inspect the apple seeds to see if any of them have already sprouted (germinated).

Step 3

Save half of the Granny Smith apple seeds out of each apple. Store these seeds in a dry place.

To give your apple seeds a better chance of sprouting, save the apple seeds (from each apple) separately and plant them in separate batches. When you're ready to plant some apple seeds, use a few seeds out of each batch.

Each time that you plant apple seeds, plant a few of the apple seeds in different places. This should be done at least one time during : Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter for 1 - 3 years.

If done properly, most of the apple tree seeds will eventually germinate naturally.

Step 4

Plant the remaining half of the fresh apple seeds immediately after removing them from the apple.

Plant these seeds about an inch deep directly into the garden or in a flower pot. The soil can be a mix of organic potting soil and organic mulch.

Some Granny Smith apple tree seeds are already germinating inside of the apple. These seeds can be planted (root-side down) directly into the garden or a flower pot.

Step 5

Water the seeds and the soil thoroughly. Keep the soil moist for 1 - 2 weeks.

Some of the seeds may sprout during the current growing season. Care for these small apple tree sprouts by watering them at least once every day if the weather is warm (or water as necessary) and shelter the small apple trees from pests, snow, ice, direct sunlight and extreme heat.

If none of the seeds germinate, chances are good that some of these seeds will still sprout in one or two years. Don't disturb the soil where apple seeds have been planted, so that the remaining seeds have a chance to sprout.

Warning! :

Never use any Chemical Fertilizers, Herbicides, Insecticides, Pesticides, or Bug Spray anywhere near your Granny Smith Apple Trees.
